What's the chancel?
"Chancel" is the name for the very front of the church where the pastor typically presides over worship. In a traditional Christian building, going back at least to the 5th Century, the chancel is on the easternmost side of the building, as is the case with our design. Since the sun rises in the east, having the church face this direction is meant to bring to mind our anticipation of Christ's second coming.
Keep in mind these are all design concepts. Designs and placement of all furniture here - including the seating in the main area - are not yet finalized.
A few items of note related to the chancel furniture:
- The items are being designed in a cooperative effort by our building designer, Elisabeth Schaser from Front Porch Design Studio, and Sean Leonard from Montgomery Woodwrights.
- The wood for these items is the same oak wood found on the church land in the beautiful trees that will surround the chapel.
- The angle of the arch in the altar and ambo (lecturn) design concepts match the angle of the larger wooden arches inside the chapel.
- The baptismal font and altar have matching marble tops.
- You may notice that the baptismal font has 8 sides. In the Lutheran church, this is often an intentional design in baptismal fonts to represent the number of people God saved from the flood in the ark (Noah, his wife, along with their 3 sons and their wives). In 1 Peter 3:20-21, Scripture uses God's saving action in the Old Testament flood as an illustration of God's saving action in the sacrament of Baptism.
